Program Overview: Fostering Creative Growth
The SAUSD Arts Pathways program is designed to provide a sequential, developmental approach to arts education that grows with your child. Beginning with broad exposure to multiple art forms in early grades and progressing toward specialized instruction in later years, this thoughtfully structured curriculum ensures every student receives a well-rounded arts education.

TK-1st Grade: Building Artistic Foundations
In these formative years, our youngest students begin their artistic journey with weekly 30-minute VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) classes. These sessions provide foundational exposure to music, movement, and visual arts in an exploratory, play-based environment.
Music Foundations
Introduction to rhythm, melody, and simple instruments through games and group activities
Visual Arts Exploration
Experimenting with colors, shapes, and various art materials to develop fine motor skills and creative expression
Movement & Dance
Developing body awareness, coordination, and self-expression through guided movement activities
2nd-3rd Grade: Focused Musical Development
As students progress to 2nd and 3rd grade, instruction becomes more focused with twice-weekly 30-minute sessions dedicated to developing musical literacy and skills. This concentrated approach allows for deeper learning and skill building in specific disciplines.
General Music Instruction
Students receive comprehensive instruction in musical concepts including notation, rhythm, and vocal techniques. These foundational skills prepare them for more specialized instruction in later grades.
Piano Fundamentals
Introduction to keyboard geography, proper hand position, and basic playing techniques. This instruction develops fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to read and interpret music—skills that transfer to other instruments and academic areas.
4th Grade: Discovering Artistic Passions
Fourth grade marks an exciting transition as students begin to explore different artistic disciplines more deeply through our Arts Wheel Rotation. This structure provides 60-minute weekly sessions in each discipline for 8 weeks, allowing students to experience various art forms before selecting their focus for 5th grade.
Choir
Develop vocal techniques, harmony, and performance skills while experiencing the joy of collective music-making
Violin
Learn proper posture, bow hold, and basic playing techniques on this versatile string instrument
Theater
Explore acting, improvisation, and storytelling while building confidence and public speaking skills
This exploratory approach allows students to discover their artistic preferences and strengths before committing to a yearlong elective in 5th grade. Teachers provide guidance throughout this process, helping students identify where their interests and talents align.
5th Grade: Developing Artistic Excellence
The culmination of our arts pathway program empowers 5th-grade students to select a yearlong arts elective based on their discovered interests and strengths. With weekly 60-minute sessions dedicated to their chosen discipline, students develop deeper skills and prepare for middle school arts opportunities.
Choir
Advanced vocal techniques, sight-reading, part-singing, and performance opportunities in school and community events. Students develop confidence, teamwork, and musical expression through diverse repertoire.
Band
Introduction to wind and percussion instruments with focus on proper technique, music reading, ensemble skills, and performance preparation. Students learn instrument care, maintenance, and collaborative musicianship.
Theater
Comprehensive drama experience including character development, script analysis, stagecraft, and performance opportunities. Students build public speaking skills, emotional intelligence, and creative problem-solving.
Violin
Advanced string techniques, music theory application, ensemble playing, and performance preparation. Students develop discipline, fine motor control, and musical interpretation skills.
